1. What Are Cookies?
Cookies are small text files that are placed on your device (computer, tablet, or mobile phone) when you visit a website. They are widely used to make websites work more efficiently, provide a better user experience, and give website owners useful information about how their site is being used.
We use cookies and similar technologies (such as local storage and session storage) to:
- Keep you signed in to your account securely

We do not use third-party analytics or advertising cookies. Our usage analytics is first-party and server-side (see Section 2.3).

2.1 Essential Cookies (Required)
ScrollTell does not set its own cookies. The only cookies in your browser are the authentication cookies set by Clerk, our authentication provider — they keep you securely signed in and are necessary for the Service to function. They cannot be disabled while you are signed in. See Clerk's privacy policy for details, and Section 3 below.
2.2 Preference Cookies (Functional)
We do not use preference cookies. Your editor preferences (such as light/dark UI mode, add-section options, and dismissed help tips) are stored in your browser's local storage, not in cookies — see Section 5. They stay on your device and are not used to track you.
2.3 Usage Analytics (No Analytics Cookies)
We record a small set of product-usage events to operate and improve the Service. This analytics is first-party and server-side, tied to your authenticated account — we do not use third-party analytics providers (such as Google Analytics or PostHog), analytics cookies, pixel tags, or device fingerprinting. Because the events are associated with your account session, no separate analytics cookie is set.
You can turn usage analytics off at any time in Account Settings. Turning it off stops collection and erases the usage events tied to your account, keeping only anonymous, aggregate totals that cannot be linked back to you.
2.4 Marketing & Advertising Cookies
We do not use marketing or advertising cookies, and we do not share your data with advertising networks. No third-party ad or conversion trackers are set.
3. Third-Party Cookies
Some cookies are placed by third-party services that appear on our pages. We do not control these cookies directly. The third parties we work with include:
- Clerk – Authentication and user management
Privacy Policy - Polar – Our Merchant of Record for purchases. Checkout happens on Polar's own hosted pages, where Polar and its payment processor (Stripe) may set cookies during a purchase.

4. Managing Cookies
4.1 Consent
We use only essential and preference cookies, and we do not use analytics or advertising cookies — so there is no cookie consent banner to accept or reject. Our first-party usage analytics is tied to your authenticated account, not to a tracking cookie. You can turn it off at any time in Account Settings.
4.2 Browser Settings
Most web browsers allow you to control cookies through their settings. You can:
- View cookies stored on your device
- Delete individual cookies or all cookies
- Block cookies from specific websites
- Block all third-party cookies
- Block all cookies (note: this will affect functionality)
- Clear cookies when you close your browser

Because we don't use third-party trackers, there are no external ad-network opt-outs to manage. To opt out of our first-party usage analytics, use the toggle in Account Settings — it stops collection and erases the usage events tied to your account, keeping only anonymous, aggregate totals that cannot be linked back to you.
5. Local Storage
In addition to cookies, we use browser local storage and session storage for certain functionality. Unlike cookies, this data is stored only on your device and is not automatically transmitted to our servers.

This list reflects the keys we set today; exact keys may change as the editor evolves. You can clear local storage through your browser's developer tools or by clearing your browsing data.
6. Impact of Disabling Cookies
Disabling certain cookies may affect your experience with the Service:

7. Do Not Track
Some browsers have a “Do Not Track” (DNT) feature that sends a signal to websites indicating you do not want to be tracked. There is currently no common industry standard for DNT signals, and we do not currently respond to DNT signals in browsers.
That said, we don't use third-party trackers, and you can opt out of our first-party usage analytics at any time in Account Settings.
We support the Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal where required by law. If your browser sends a GPC signal, we will treat it as a request to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information.
8. Policy Updates
We may update this Cookie Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, technologies, or legal requirements. When we make changes:
- We will update the “Last updated” date at the top of this page
- For significant changes, we may show a notice on our website
- We may request renewed consent for optional cookies if required
